Today fucking sucked. I'll start at the beginning, which includes yesterday. I couldn't sleep the night before the exam (Sunday) then I woke up before my alarm. The test was reasonable except for a few questions. I actually got irritated by this one professor's section becuase she asked questions on things she never stressed in class, and in some cases, implied that we did not have to know... I had trouble concentarting for most of it, but finished with plenty of time to check answers. I'm sure I passed. Then I crammed down 2 Krispy Kremes graciously provided to us by the 2nd years. Felt like an ultimate fatass. All I did all week was study and eat, usually simultaneously. Went to the arc a few times, but not enough.

Broke my vow not to discuss the test, then played a great series of raquetball games with Adam. I almost beat him, but he took 2 of 3... I rushed home and got dressed "professionally" for my first patient interview of med school. We had to interview standardized patients (actors-but they seem like the real thing) about pain. This was a "sink or swim" type of thing, we had no real instructions or guidance, we just went in. In the training center we buddied up and watched live audio/video feeds of our partners interviewing. I did fine, but i had an easy case, an older lady with arthritis pain. Other pwople had dudes with metastatic prostate cancer and a teen with menstrual cramps. How does a guy empathize with that?

Came home and changed, and headed for Aaron's in Newport. Brought food and BBQed steak, chicken, corn, and spuds. Drank a good amount of beer, and most of the crowd showed up (it's sort of the tall atletic surfer white crowd) then some more classmates showed and we played a few too many drinking games. The rest of the class was at Yard House so we met them there just in time for last call, stayed 20 minutes, and by that time i was obliterated. Got a ride back to a classmate's place in PV, and dropped my phone in the toilet. Was extrmemly pissed. Dried it out and let it sit all night, fortunately I only lost the front display... After 10 minutes there I ambled home by myself and stole a road cone from the arc parking lot to pput in front of Mark's bedroom door. He was awake and equally wasted. we hung out ehn passed out.

I woke up at 7:00 for class feeling like a freight train hit me. Did not ride my bike to class, fell asleep for 20 minutes during the literally worthless 2 hours of lecture given by our Biochem professsor. He was doing an intro to his section, and told stories the whole time. Then we had our funny German lipd man teacher, and when everyone finished flipping frantically through his notes and getting hand cramps from writing the whole time, someone elected me to go ask him to post his powerpoints online. I had to give the guy my password to the student website.
It's weird, I am one of 5 course reps for the class (chosen at random) who have to meet with the faculty to tell them what we think of how the course is going. I have opnions, most of which I'd rather not express directly to the faculty over lunch.

Jetted home right after class, ate, cleaned my room, removed the ant colony from the kitchen trashcan, the took a half hour nap. Went to the arc and spent my last ounces of energy lifting a few weights and getting my ass kicked at badminton by Kris. I seriously go to school with the best athletes I've ever met. Came home and watched Shawshank Redemption.

I am a little depressed lately. I feel lonely, like a piece of me I've depended on for so long is missing. School is not even that stressful yet, it's all the other stuff, like the fact that I'd like to get involved in clubs, etc. but I don't know if I'll have time, and the fact that I haven't talked to any of my friends lately and I'm withdrawing big time. I fee like I don't have the will to socialize unless it's getting faded with my classmates (which is not all that rewarding anymore, we already know each other). On one hand I'm really glad I don't have to juggle a relationship right now, but on the other hand I miss having someone close, someone I can tell anything. I miss her, and I think about running into her every day. Oh yeah, and i haven't told my brother we broke up. I am scared of how the girls will react, they really liked Yvonne and got pretty close to her. I feel like I let them all down or something. Now I have the added guilt of not saying anything. Sometimes I don't like to open up to my brother, I feel like he's too intense a lot of the time. Also we're close, but not as close as if we'd grown up together. It's weird.

I always get like this when I'm hung over...

Well, it's T minus 12 hours until my first exam of medical school. I studied for 8 hours yesterday and 8 hours today (broken up of course), consumed too many study snacks/coffee/tea/vitamins (I actually know what each viatmin is and what biochemical reactions it participates in - eat your Thiamine, if not you'll get Beriberi, and that's very very bad)... Oh God I am delerious.

So today I officially confirmed that my friends here are fucking genius. One has not studied but can remember every utterance form every professor for the past 3 weeks-straight up photographic memory. The other, my roommate, has not received so much as ONE "B" grade since 7th grade english. Holy shit. I can fill a dumpster with all the sub "A" grades i've received... Oh yeah, and they both rocked sports in college. (A little bout of inferiority going on, it'll be gone in a moment).

I also remembered this one time I went to the med student lecture hall with Anne 2 years ago when i was starting to apply, and thinking to myself, "one day I'll be sitting in here for classes." Um, what else? There are big plans for tomorrow night, when we will all work as hard emptying our brains as we did filling them. I can't effing wait. Also, Adam has his amps and guitars here now too, so hopefully there will be some jamming going on next week too...

Whenever my caffeine wears off I will be going to bed, knowing that I don't (and can't) know everything for this test, but knowing my chances of passing are pretty good. Hopefully I'll also realize that somehow I deserve to be here and that I'll make a decent doctor without memorizing every biochemical reaction in the human body.

I forgot to mention that the other day (yesterday) i went shopping at Albertson's and after the produce section, where I loaded my cart, I stopped to buy a steak at the butcher counter and someone jacked my cart! It was maybe 10 feet behind me and I was so engrossed in red meat that I didn't see it happen. What the hell>?

Anyway, I studied at the Sci Lib alone for 4 hours this morning, then came back and played raquetball woth Kris and lifted some weights. Made yummy asian stir fry (using up all my oldish veggies) and grubbed. Met up with Usa and Amir on campus and put in 4 more hours. Damn. i need to get a life. Or a passing grade. 70% will do it. There's a special equation they use a lot in med school: P=MD :)

Wannabe Livejournal Thing:
Music - Dashboard -- Best Deceptions.

What a long day. Rode with Mark to class at 8:00, got annoyed and confused by our MCB professor, was again wowed by Dr. Wallace and his view that mitochondria are the root of all deleterious health processes, got off at noon (YES!!!) then spent 60 bucks at Albertson's...

Studied for ~2 hrs at the grad lounge solo, then went with some first years to the pub, where we were graciously provided with free pizza and beer by AGS. At least they use our money for useful things unlike ASUCI...

Went to the 2nd year tutors' review then studied at school for 2 more hours. Now I am tired and I can't wait to sleep in!!!

Oh yeah, I got aletter from VDC about gettting busted for beer Labor Day. Went to get "reprimanded" from Marie. Not so bad. Moral= hide it better (already done it, with 50 people at that).

I need to hang out with my friends. Maybe next week, some evening.

I feel like Doogie Howser I type in my blog at the end of every episode (day). Except that I'm NOT a genius and I've emerged from puberty. Today was nice, I woke up and ran into Mason Park through the path near Amherst court then around to Harvard near Culver then back up to VDC, maybe 2 miles? The uphill part at the end killed that spot just under my ass (NOT my 'taint). Missed the first 2 hrs of class since the teacher is worthless, but got an hour of studying in. Then went to class, was wowed by Mr. Mitochondria, ate lunch with classmates under a tree, almost passed out in Ethics class, came home and ate, went to the Sci lib with Adam, came home, studied in the VDC grad lounge with Alyssa and $J (Manijeh) and broke down to watch ER. Now I'm too tired to go on and I'm going to sleep.

Last night I cranked out almost an entire song, the chorus is really good, packed woth metaphors and medical references :) I just need to write the rest, I already have music. Thinking of playing the talent show or recording for the med student art website with warren... We'll see.

I feel a little stressed, but not too bad. I think I'm too relaxed. i am studying hard, but traditionally I am a concept kind of guy, but med school is all about the details. I can tell you that Xeroderma Pigmentosum is caused by a mutated gene encoding a DNA repair protein and that it menifests clinically as extreme UV sensitivity, high cancer rates, and pigmentation abnormalities. But I can't remember to go to the Police station to get my ticket signed off, or to go buy paper towels...

Weather has been nice, I've been inside. Can't wait until Mon at 10:00!!!!!!!!!!

I am tired so this will be fast. Had our BBQ yesterday, great turnout, jumped in the pool, noone got busted for drinking, ate good food, went down to Newport (I thought I was over it...) then came back to Lisa's and ate pizza with Randy and Esther. I like Randy, and he made some good points about stuff. Studied off and on today, saw yvonne moving in, called her only to be ignored once again so i tried not to tun into her. That will not last long since she lives 50 feet away... Went to Gabe's and managed to stay sober through a few drinking games. Got an overdose of a select few classmates whom I'd prefer not to hang out with anynmore, especially when they're wasted. Got coerced in going to Dave and Buster's it blew (surprise...0. Got home and here I am.

Saturday, September 18, 2004

It's late. I should have studies tonight because I don't know Biochemistry, but instead I got roped into co-coordinating a 1st year Vist Del Campo-hosted BBQ. It was fun, good people, good food, good drinks. Got suckered into going to Newport (so over it) to Blue Beet where we waited in line, had a beer, and left. Crappy cover band included for free. I am so behind and struggling, but hopefully this weekend will get me back on track. By "back on track" I mean memorizing every Goddamned chemical reaction in the humna body. We'll see, hopefully I can relax this weekend...

I'm sitting at the computer (part of my new daily routine of "wake up, go to class, eat lunch, go to class, work out, eat dinner, study, mess around on the computer, go to bed, repeat) listening to Phantom Planet. They're mellow, which is what I"ve been in the mood for lately.

Today, once again, the mbgb grad student orientation began with yummy breakfast and coffee, all free food, IN THE LOBBY OF OUR LECTURE HALL. We are broke and hungry and can't eat it. When the grad kids are done we scrounge every lsat drop of their coffee and today I grubbed 1/4 bagel and this really good honey pecan cream cheese. That is what my life has come to, excitememnt provided by a new cream cheese variety. Nah, just kidding. There's a BBQ Friday at my complex and a post party for the first years, so we;ll se how that goes given the fact that we can't have EtOH at the pool or parties at our apartments. Party Paul and Party Dan (our neihbors) agreed to host, bu I'm sure 75 people will overflow to my place. Whatever, I'm being anal.

Studied at Diedrich tonight, now i am over it, but that damn chai they kept dumping in my empty cup (the 2 girls kept making too much and pawning it off on me) is keeping me from sleep at this point. I tried to send out a mass email informing people of my life/condition/happenings but my dumb web email program didn't send it. I'll try again tomorrow.

Until then...

It's Taco Tuesday! Did I eat tacos/wait in line/dance/drink/check out the opposite sex at El Ranchito? Hell no. I had "Tryptophan Tuesday" with my fellow MSI-VDC homies in our grad study lounge. I got so into biochem that I missed freakin' Scrubs. Damn. These 2 days have been tiring. Yesterday we had late class (9:00) and damn was that exquisite. We even got out at noon, but I had to meet with my group for this Ethics assignment. After arguing in the computer lab, driving to Taco Bell to get food, discussing, typing, and complaining, it was 4:00! Daaaamn. Went to the ARC, ate, and rode to the Sci Lib where I hit the books solo until 9:00, came home, read, and slept. Woke up with my legs tired from biking twice yesterday, so caught a ride to class with Mark. Long day, lots of Biochem, ping pong, and boring-ass patient doctor and society lecture about spirituality that led me nowhere. No time for arc today, so i ate and studies, then shopped to food at tj's and studied more. Here I am. I denied repeated rewuestes to attend Taco Tuesday, partly because I hate the scene, partly because I felt guilty and needed to catch up on studying.

People want to have a bbq and party here on Friday. It will be fun, and hopefully we can constrain the after party to Party Paul and Party Dan's apartment soI don't get evicted. I swear I am an old man tired of partying. But it gives us something to look forward to I guess, which is important in the first 2 years of med school when every 5 seconds you say "why the hell am I learning THIS? When do I get a break?"

I am dreading this saturday for so many reasons....

Sunday, September 12, 2004

OK, 10 minutes of making amino acis flashcards and here I am. I must relate the past weekend. Studied pretty hard with Kris and Adam Thursday night (Mark was being antisocial) and went to bed. Did I check the class schedule (every class hour of the quarter is planned out and distributed to us on the first day) for Friday? Nope. I heard Mark say the test was at 9:00, then we're done for the day and off to SD. 7:45 a.m. rolls around and I hear a loud rapping on my metal VDC fireproff door. "Dude, I'm sorry, the test is at 8:00!!" We literally rolled out of bed and into the parking lot just in time. Mental note: don't listen to Mark. the quiz was short and manageable, I might even say easy (for med school). After it was over, I walked outside the lecture hall and was transported back to UCI bio. Everyone was cheking their answers with everyone else. I managed to fight it off for 5 whole miuted then succumbed. I seem to have missed 2-3 out of 24. No problem, cuz in med school P=MD. It was decided that Mark, Kris, Aaron and I would go down in Aaron's Astro van (almost as cool as Yagi's). Oh yeah, we were going down to UCI COM's 11th annual student faculty retreat. It's a unique thing where we hang out at one of the nicest hotels in downtown San Diego, drink, meet some faculty, bond, drink, eat nice food, go to the beach, drink, and oh yeah, learn about emergency medicine (this year's theme). We set out around 11 am Friday with a 12er of Bud and a 12er of Coors Light (yay). Allison (revered my most as the best-looking girl in our class) was suppoed to go with us, but Scott rolled up in the Benz and she opted to travel in "style." We followed them, Lee, and Adam/Anna and stopped at Pedro's Taco's (seen the bumper sticker, never ate there-very good shrimp tacos), dusted the beer, got another 18er and arrived at the Wyndham Emerald Plaza Hotel (yeah, it's nice). Already wasted, and without anything to do for 2 hours, we hit up the pool and hung out. Gradually people arrived, hit up the ppol with us, and also drank beer. I had an argument with this jackass from Newport that was in town for ASR about "909" and that whole BS. We went to our rooms (Kris on Jesse's and my floor) then checked in. Next: dinner. It was set up all nice but consisted of burgers and hotdogs with all the trimmings except cheese. Had a nice speech, blah blah blah. The second years throw a party for the 1st years every year, and due to the $2000 damaga done to the presidential suite (which had TWO hot tubs in the room) we had in in the ballroom. So much more alcohol was consumed, so much dancing done, so many indiscretions witnessed, but all in all it was a great time. Got to know people better, danced (I know, I know) talked to old UCI med friends, etc. Passed out cold after 13 hours of marathon drinking.

Hangover would be an understatement. Kris an I woke up an hour after the workshops started, and we were not alone. I could barely walk, think, and eat. Learned how to intubate from Dr. Bey, a cool German ER doc at UCI. Sutured a pig's foot, put a splint on someone's arm, then pigged out for lunch. Mark Langdorf (my interviewer/ER chief) gave a cool talk on how great EM is and how we should all love it and practice it. Scary but inspirational. We then had 4 hours of free time. After much argument, deliberation, and hangover-ness, the SD kids in my class decided to go to Scripp's beach, which is literally outside the door from all the oceanography labs. Hott. The water was so warm and clear I thought I was in Hawaii. Layed around a bunch, some 2nd years showed up, then we headed back, got dressed up, and hit up the "nice dinner." I sat not with the usual crew (big white guys and hot white girls) but with some really nice other people. Good food, cool speeches, more raffling (they had raffles everyday but I didn't win ANYTHING). decided to be sober that night, so I secured beer for the homies in the 12th floor where some guys had wheeled a beer cooler cart filled with at least 100 beers in their room. Saw Gail, met her boyfriend Darren (awesome guy), then we headed out to this club called L5 that some guy in our class had gotten us ALL on the gues list for. Had one beer. Took a cab, got snaked by Scott, waited in line, Dr. Booty yelled at my friends, got in. The club was really nice, relatively pricey, but good tunes and packed with MS1/2 kids. Hung out, talked to Warren and Gail a bunch, danced a bit with E. Made fun of Aaron and Mark plenty, Kris was the bread in a Flilpina sandwich on stage, denied a member of the DTC (YES), made some new friends, spoke Vietnamese to Ken a bunch, etc. etc. Good times, I tell you. Lotsa of undulation in that place and I'd be lying if I said that bothered me. Took bike cabs to get CA burritos at this place, met some more 2nd years, walked home sober and content and fell asleep.

Got up (feelin' good) and cut out soon. Went to La jolla to pick up Aaron's cell that he left in a bike cab, ate fruit juice for breakfast, and made it back to home sweet home VDC.

Whoo. VERY memorable weekend. We'll see more of it in the year-end slideshow and I'll post pics soon.

I think I skipped a day. Or 2. In that time, however, I've been lectured on about 2 quarters each of Biochem and Cell bio. Effing amazing the pace at which these profs speak, write, and click through powerpoint slides. We had our first Patient, doctor and society group session yesterday. My group leader is the chaplain from the med ctr, he's such an intense guy. No tin the loud, fast way, but in the emotionally deep and experienced way. This class is going to be cool. much talking and discussion (and a 2" binder of core notes). Speaking of notes, every day after class is filled with finding, printing, tarding, organizing and dispersin old notes, old tests, current notes, current powerpoints, and supplememtal crap that I think I will have felled an entire rainforest by the time 2 years go by. There is so much material, but also so much damn paper. i am managing it all alright this far since it's a review.

Mark and I did in-room solo studying for a couple of hours yesterday and 3.5 today. That's all the hard-core i will do for this 25Q quiz friday. Tomorrow i want to cook and relax.

Met my "big sib" yesterday. He's really smart and less social. he gave me no notes, books, tests, or valuable advice. i want a foster big sib. My friend MoneyJ's big sib cooked her dinner tonight. that's the kind of big sib i want to be.

I declined El ranchito and el torito last night, but tonight i think people are trying to actually study. the week's almost over sa soon as it began.

been to the ARC 3 days in a row. good me. plus my damn bike ride to school is cardio enough for the day. I did, however, elicit a better route than all the way around Peltason. Down Pereira, cut through the admin/student center road to the ring, around and up bio hill across the bridge. much more abbreviated hill-climb, less swet, less exhaustion. thank god my bike has gears.

i miss my fam and friends, but soon my time management will be top-notch an di'll be able to hang a little more.

i am realizing my class is all uber-humanoids. all athletic, good looking, and very type A. everyone's a leader, but you can't have a class of 100 leaders. so they have like 30 leadership posts per class. it's weird. i want to do something but i don't want to commit my time this early. maybe next year.

um....i think that's it for now, no gorey, cool, or even nerdy med school stuff to report. Mark's "girl" is here so i'm all alone. by choice though, didn't want to study at starbucks. bed time. more later.

Monday, September 06, 2004

Tomorrow hell begins. i am not so scared, just really nervous. Labor day was cool, woke up late, went to Target (didn't buy anything) then came home and Luis came over. went to Albion' and got beer and meat. Andrea, Julie, Lizzie, and her friend rolled too. We met Jeff, Adam, Allison, and boyfriends/girlfriends at the pool. Eric W. and his girl, Patty, Kris, and the trio of second year girsl jocking certain people's shit came too. Scott showed up along with a few other people whose names i can't remember. I cooked up burgers, we drank a bunch of beer, got rolled by an UNDERGRAD RA, came home and chilled. then katie and Megan brought the bootleg Anchorman and we watched it in the grad lounge thanks to Marie. cool stuff.
Mark located and printed histo notes like a true nerd. escellent. tomorrow we ride....

So I just looked at my blog page and it looks like it got chewed up and spit out. Maybe my attempt at html coding to insert pictures has caused irreparable damage...

I just returned from a VDC solo pool sesh. It is about 90 degrees on the hill today, and the pool was much-needed. Got some reading done for class Tuesday. Iopted not to meet up with a bunch of MS1's at the beach because I was lazy/over the beach, but Jim and the fam came and took me to lunch. That was nice except that I haven't told them about Yvonne and I yet, and they kept asking and I couldn't do it in front of the girls. That (and my guilt) is a whole other issue...

Last night was fun, if you can decipher my drunk ramblings in the previous entry you'll figure that out.

It;s weird, in the past 2 weeks I've felt some of the most horrible feelings but also some really cool ones. Physical too. Like just now I got out of the pool, stayed wet, and skated home down th hill, just cruising wih the wind on me, it was a pretty amazing feeling. I recommend skating while wet on a really hot day. Especially downhill.
oh yeah, when unloading the tv from julie's car at vdc, ran into two random people who said to come over to play video games. grabbed vodka tonic supplies and rolled over. Nate and leah were cool, 2 MATH GRAD STUDENTS!!! We played mario kart for gamecube, i won one of 10 races then went home,. They were really nice, and leah worked a scam to move one roommate in and split the $20 a day while she crashe din the living room (couldn't et in her own room withour paying, obviously..). good deal. THEN here i am....

So since this morning I lost my post, I am bitter. but today was cool. woke up, ran from VDC to the Ring, around 1 time, and back toi the ME bridge, where I started walking. Mind you it was 1:00 pm, so it was hot as shit... Ran a bit more and got home. cooked lunch, did laundry, oragnized my course notes, all 300+ pages, and went to target. spent $200 on school stuff, cleaners, bathroom stuff, and misc items for apt. Damn...

Read some of the book i have to have read by tuesday, then left for Bucca Di beppo for luis and andy's bday. drank a few jack+cokes and sangrias, grubbed some really good italian food, and showed my place to the friends. went to casa clayman, saw lizzy b., hung out with mike, andy, luuis, julie, andrea/luis, and richard/larry. saw 2 guys from house of 1000 bongs and their hot girlfriends, then caught a ride home to vdc from lizzy. got mike's tv (HOTT) and here i am. tired, worn out, drunk, excited, scared, and depressed. that's it.

MEDICAL SCHOOL, DAY 1:

Mark and I DRIVE (he bought a permit, didn't know any better) to COM, roll up to the lecture hall. My first thought: lotsa white surfer guy types....veerd. Got our name badges/packets, sat rhough a welcome apeech or two, ate breakfast, met some people (lots of UCSD/UCI/UCLA kids around) and everyone was really nice. Ran into ~10 UCI kids, most of them insane Middle Eastern Gunner tpyes, split from Mark, met some cool fols. Lots of mingling. the registration (paying, photos-2 of them, signing forms, getting coat, etc.) took 2 hours, then lunch, more minglinf with different people. Everyone claims they live in VDC but we haven't seen them yet. One girl tried to move into Park Worst but the previous residents were still there. She's in some crappy hotel and I volunteered Mark to help her move :) After more orientation, more ass-kissing, and a really cool motivational speech by Dr. Thomas Parham, head of counseling services, we were rejuvinated, but tired from a half day of actual activity... Left at 3:00, went to pool with Adam, cool guy from LA who went to Cornell, soaked rays, went to Albertson's with Mark so i couold actually have shampoo, bought a 20 pack of Coors lite. THe evening activity was at lucky Strike, so we had some beers and I fixed chicken and spaghetti since I figured they'd have no free food. we were wondering how we'd get over there, then our neighbors came over (Manijeh and Sujin) and offered us a ride. SCORE!! We ate, showered, and headed for the block. it was blowin up at Lucky Strike, they had 5 lanes and FREE FOOD. Damn me for cooking precious food... Talked to Gail (Ryan) for a while, then talked to a few other 1st years whose names I can't remember... Bought some drinks, hung out. tried to bowl, but the lanes were all full. Met some HB folks in our class (veerd) and shared some weird stories. Adamwanted to have VDC after party so he told poel, but they wanted to go to another bar. (There were about 50 of us by then) so someone suggested BJ's because they thought it was at the block. Oh, non OC people, that's the OTHER retarded OC mall... 20 of us ended up at Dave and busters getting wated. Talked to Alic and gayhan for a while, good stuff. The first year class is a bunch of fucking uber-humans, with athletic, intellecual and musical talents, it's crazy. Then moneyJ said it was time to go, so Mark and I obliged. rolled home and here we are....

Ps - m y "shift: key sux ass, it's so hard to type CAPITAL LeTTERS!!!!!!

Farewell, and viva EtOH, the social lube :)
